Gate

The gate of Ba Shui stood as a bulwark; guarding the city of Han Zhong from invasion, it afforded the people working the fields with a confident sight… or at least it used to. Up until today, the gate had been unmanned and the elements had taken their toll. While the walls were still intact and the gate itself able to open and close on demand, to truly restore it would take considerable effort, effort that was further exacerbated by the danger of the coming storm.
Ma Chao of Xi Liang rallied his soldiers and set forth, the din of thousands of horse hooves had begun to crash across the plains like so much summer lightning. Rumors suggested that Cao Mengde, a man of respectable family ties to the Central Plains had begun to rally the other lords against the Horse Lord in an effort to aid Wei Yan of Chang An. Across the land, people had begun to whisper of the dramatic battle that was sure to take place… even people who had invested much in Ma Chao.
People like Xing Cai.
Wei forced himself not to dwell upon the uncomfortable memories of his exchange with the Maid of Shu. She had been assigned to Han Zhong, and thus far seemed willing to commit to the duty she had been assigned. With luck, she had heeded his advice already, but considering how… spirited her father was, it was doubtful. Still, unlike Zhang Fei, Xing Cai seemed to have a level head on her shoulders, even if she tended to focus upon her heart a bit more then Wei might in the same situation.
The ensuing conflict was the perfect example. Both Ma Chao and Wei Yan were men of great personal might. But both had taken the mantle of prefect as well, and this conflict was both unnecessary and costly. As far as could be told, both men had displayed conduct unbecoming of statesmen and now for each to slake his own ego, war was required. Lives would be lost so that the so called “heroes” of the land might add another notch to their weapons, and the haste to commit to battle that both sides displayed was indicative of the wrong-headedness of the whole situation.
Of course, Jiang Wei could not speak for his Lord, and indeed Liu Bei might decide to enter the conflict… though it was difficult to say on which side. There were reasonable arguments for both… though in the mind of Jiang Wei, such arguments were overshadowed by the negatives. Shu was better served by remaining true to itself, not throwing in with the warlords on a whim.
”My lord, we have arrived at Ba Shui gate and found it deserted. What are your orders?”
“Have the archers take up defensive positions on the ramparts and prepare to begin fortifying and repairing the existing infrastructure. Architects from Han Zhong will be sent for, but for now we will have to make due with our current resources. I also want all captains to begin assessing the extent of the damage that has been done to this gate and report their findings to me as quickly as possible.”
”Do you wish us to close the gate?”
“Do not impede merchant traffic, but as of this point we have no orders to allow soldiers from other forces to pass into Shu. Envoys will be halted and questioned but not detained unless they display violence or resistance.”
Jiang Wei has claimed Ba Shui gate for Shu and begun occupying it.
