There will be four types of soldiers and they can be equipped with whatever weapons you choose.
*************************
Ruffians: Lowly peasants who have not washed in weeks, maybe months. Most likely they are drunks, but do not mistake them for Pirates! They are Land Pirates! Burp!
Militia: Basically Ruffians but with a standard military issue weapon and some tactical training. They are a bit less likely to run off during battle if they see a cart of wine in the supply area!
Veterans: Men who have seen many a battle and have lived to tell the tale. Reliable and common amongst most good armies.
Elites: Battle tested soldiers who will not break unless death is absolutely imminent. With a strong leader they will fight to the last man.

Promotions
All units above have levels to advance in through their experience of battle. In order for them to move up through their own ranks they must fight a certain amount of battles to upgrade.
Its easy as 1, 2, 3.
Ruffians > 1 Battle > Militia
Militia > 2 Battles > Veterans
Veterans > 3 Battles > Elites
Just so no one take this the wrong way. Ruffians needs to win one battle to move to the rank of Militia. Militia need to have two battles to become Vets. That mean that you have won three battles so far. In order for Vets to become Elites, they need to win three more battles and they are at the top. That gives six battles in your winning streak.
